    Sediment in Well Water

We recently had someone drive into our well cap and break it and ever since they hit it we have had sediment in our water (we never have before) and we just had a complete well test in August with no problems. Has anyone heard of this happening, our well contractor says he cannot be sure that the sediment is a result of the cap being hit, but the sediment began within an hour after the well was hit. Any response would be appreciated. Thanks

The cap is on the casing and the casing is an important part of the well. I suspect you have had some damage to the casing or the water line if underground, where it attaches to the pitless adapter if you have one. Without electrocuting yourself, remove the well cap and listen for water as you use water in the house. If you hear any, call a different driller or pump guy and see what is leaking to stir up dirty water.

Gary, The sediment is metal (we usd a magnet to figure this out)-not dirt/sand, what would that mean? Thanks so much for your help. Stephanie

Hi Stephanie. IMO it means it should stick to a magnet.

Seriously, it may be iron/rust. It really doesn't mean much when we don't want it in the water and it seems to have been caused by the well casing being hit.

Did you run water until the pressure switch closes and starts the pump and remove the well cap when the pump is running to listen for water leaks yet?

This may be just mineral from the pipes, if he hit it hard enough to break some loose. If so, it will clear. Just remove your aerators from the faucets and run the cold water until it clears at all faucets.
