Help with cistern irrigation system- new here

Hey guys and gals. New here, and I need a bit of help. We just bought a house on 3.5 acres that has a cistern system that collects rain water from the roof, etc. It looks like a wishing well in the front yard. The sprinkler system that is connected to it is 8 zone. The system consist of a 4" submersible pump, pressure tank and pressure switch, and of course the zone controller. Here's the problem. The pump doesn't run. There is power thru the pressure switch and to the pump. I have just started looking into this, and have yet to pull the pump up. That's happening this evening. If I'm not mistaken, the pump is just on the end of PVC pipe. The "well" is aprox 4 ft in diameter and ??? deep. I have read that these types of pumps should be placed inside a pipe to simulate a well casing. The area to be watered is aprox 3/4 to 1 acre. And since it doesn't work, I have no idea as to the zoning of the system. I also believe it's a Flotec pump. If I have to replace the pump, what would be your recommendation? Would I be smart to rent a gas pump and try to hook into the system to see how the zoning is? Or just go with an equivalent sized sub pump?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Seeing what the system needs is a good idea.

A Flotec pump is junk. I know that's a bit crude, but truthful. Just like their tanks. Big box stores always beat the manufacturers up on price so they cheap out on the quality.

If this is a citern, it's not very deep. So be sure what you have. A dug well or a cistern (tank).

    Bob,
A bit more info. I pulled the pump out tonite. 27 ft from bottom of pump to the elbow to the the tank. So, 3 ft inner diameter by 27 - 30 ft. The pump was not on the bottom. I took some pics of the piping and pump, along with the complete setup. not sure how to post them here. Anyway, the pump is a Flotec submersible model #FP 3212-02. Not sure what the tank is. As I said before, there is a pressure switch, no pump start relay.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Oh, this appears to be installed by "irrigation specialist".......... I say that because of the sticker on the timer.....

I just spread quite abit of bermuda seed, and w/o the sprinkler system, it's gonna be tough to not loose it all. Moving sprinklers around on this size of property sux..........

    HELP......

The irrigation specialist must have bought the pump at a big box store. That tells me he's not much of a pro.

Most pumps bought there are 10 gpm pumps which is the wrong one for your application. A 25 or 30 gpm would have been better. If the pump doesn't run, be sure to check your electric with a volt meter. You should have 230 volts unless it's a 1/2hp which could (but not necessarilly) be 115 volts. The info should be written on the motor. The model number doesn't mean a thing to me as it's the big box's number which doesn't cross.

    bob,
power is good to the pump. The control box is a franklin electric 2801054915.

Suggestions? Pump and tank wise? Don't want to replace this every other year or so......

Oh, it is a 3 wire.... red, yellow, black, and of course green......

Good, check the voltage first. If you get a pump from me it will be a two wire and you won't need a control box. It's just another thing to go bad.

Tell me how much your sprinklers are going to need in gallons per minute. Remember that the pump shouldn't be large enough that it can over pump the well. It wouldn't hurt to rent a gas powered unit and test pump the well first.

When posting pics, don't have any spaces or charachters in the file name.

I can get you a pump in 3 to five days shipping it ground. If I don't have something in stock, they will drop ship it from the manufacturer for me.

Not having installed this system, and not knowing how many sprinklers are on each zone, not sure I can answer the question about how many gpm's they use.....

Do you know how many and what kind of heads there are on a zone? Most popups use aroung 2.5 gpm. Shrub heads that just spray use less than 1 gpm. That might get you close.

No clue Bob...... All I know is there are 8 valves...... and a bunch of heads, and even more that I'm sure I haven't found yet.......

Might have to rent a pump to hook into the system to try to figure this all out. As far as over pumping the well, remember, this is a cistern/storage well. with the dimensions I mentioned, aprox 4ft dia X 28 ft deep, I calculate aprox 2600 gals......

I am presuming the system worked properly at one point in time.......
