Thread: Single or Double Pipe Jet System

What are the exact diffferences between a single and a double pipe jet system? I see the diagrams of the two and should see the answer to my question. I have two pipes leading from the pump to the well head that enter some type of metal casting that's attached to the well head. I take it this is a single pipe system.

In either case, how does a person drain the water out of the well head to prevent freezing during winter. There's a cap on one of the pipes and when removed the cap has water at the top of the pipe.

I know draining down about five feet will keep the well from freezing during winter, but how do I to get the water level down to that point? Hand pump or sipon the water out?

You have a deep well jet. It could be a twin pipe or a single pipe. If you have that cap, you can put a hose down the pipe to blow air to expel the water or, just put a broom handle down far enough to push the water out. Both pipes will equalize in levelness. (Is that a word?)

Sounds like you have a 2 inch well with a single pipe jet. If you had a 6 inch well then it would be a twin pipe jet. With the single pipe jet the pump circulates water between the 1 1/4" jet pipe and the 2" casing. With a twin pipe assembly the water gets circulated in the 2 lines going down to a jet assembly. Both systems create a suction on the foot valve and thats how water enters the system.

If you want to winterize the well simply take the plug off the top of the well head,get a 3/4" tube place it down 4',plug the end with your thumb, pull it out, Drain the water from the tube, and repeat until you are done.

A single pipe jet will have 2 lines going into the well head. 1 1/4" on top and the 1" on the bottom.
