    leak in waterpump

Well I am new here and have some questions. I have a 1hp shallow jet pump that is leaking where the motor shaft connects to the (impellar?) housing. Its a steady stream of water. I was wondering if I need a new bushing or seal there, or do I have to replace the whole thing.

the pump is a 1hp waterace from lowes

Take the pump to a pump repair shop, most electric motor shops also replace seals. I would recommend however that you may want to buy a good pump. Bob on this site sells quality stuff. You get what you pay for from the big box stores.

Jeff is right about the Big Box stuff.

We replace seals here, usually after putting new bearings in the motor. We always change the seal. Seals usually don't leak unless the pump ran dry and got the seal hot enough to do damage.

Water Ace pumps are sold by Myers. The reason I didn't say "made by Myers" is that they also sell a China Special pump that I wouldn't give a nickel for a truckload of. If you have one of these, go for the new pump. If it's an actual Myers pump painted brown to disguise it so I don't know that Myers (who is one of my Vendors) actually made it, you can try to have the seal changed. While your at it, you will definately need new bearings in the motor. Usually when a seal does go, in about two weeks, the bearings will be dry and squeeling like a stuck hog.

It's easy if you know how.

Take the four bolts off that hold the two halves of the pump out. The part that is still attached to the motor is the seal plate. Screwed to that will be the diffuser. (It may or not have screws) Take the Diffuser off to get to the Impeller underneath. You will have to hole the shaft at the back end of the motor somehow, (they are all different, some have screw slots, some have flat spots to use a wrench, some have neither) while you unscrew the impeller from the motor shaft. It has right hand threads. Under the impeller still slid up on the shaft will be ther rotating part of the seal. Pull it off with channel locks. Now take the four bolts off that hold the seal plate to the motor. Remove the seal plate from the motor. From the motor side of the seal plate, push the white ceramic and rubber cup away from you, removing it from the cup it sets in that is machined into the seal plate. Clean everything up, reverse the above and your in business. Do not scratch or get anything on the two faces of the new seal. Use silicone spray to clean both with before putting them together.
