2 Years ago I bought this house, built in 1820. The well is I'm told "hand dug" or a shallow well. I'm not sure of the exact depth, but the pump is in the basement.

Today something went wrong, and my cold water started running hot (assuming that the cold water supply couldnt keep up with the larger hot water tank)

I shut the pump down after it ran for about 30 minutes, and then let it rest for a few hours. I again ran the pump for about 30 minutes, and I just shut it off.

There is a tank for cold water, and a tank for hot water. Usuually when I flush the toilet or start to do the dishes, the pump comes on for about 5 minutes.

I'm not sure if I have to prime this pump and maybe that is the issue, but I see no provisions on the pump for priming. it simply has an input line that runs out the side of the foundation, and an output line that runs to the cold water tank.

the pump SOUNDS like it's pulling water.. but I don't really know what I'm talking about, so I could be wrong.

ANY help anyone has to offer me would be great, as I'm really not experienced at this at all.

thanks
Jim
