    Motor overload trip

An overload in the motor will usually trip when the pump is cycling on and off like when filling the pool.

You are correct in a way but it will trip alot quicker keeping the pump running. Sometimes it will build up and shut off before it has time to trip the overload. This is why you need to cycle it a few times to get it to trip. Components in the control box(turned out to be the old style solid state relay in the control, instead of a good GE mechanical relay so you hear the audible clicking)or thrust bearing in the motor on 2-wire when your getting proper voltage to the motor(water hammer breaking the brittle thrust bearing or slipping).
