Hey all.

I just bought a home several months ago which is on city water and sewer, however a well and pump still remains in the basement and goes to one of the outside spigots. I am guessing the entire house was on the well many years ago. My home was built in the 1950s in an area which at the time was not very populated.

I basically know nothing about it, and the previous owner did not know anything else besides "It's great for watering the grass and garden!". That sure has proven to be true!

Questions/Comments:
  • This thing sure looks like it has seen better days - should I be concerned?
  • Are there any maintenance items I should be aware of?
  • What happens if this thing just started spewing water everywhere? What would I want to do, unplug the pump?
  • It kinda freaks me out how it goes right through the basement wall - I can't really see anything inside the blocks, is it sealed off from the outside? I haven't seen or noticed any critters crawling in, so I guess its all good.
  • Why are there two lines which run into the pump from outside of the house?
  • What kind of duty can this pump handle? I don't feel garden watering with a hose is taxing on it at all, however when I hook up a sprinkler and water the lawn for an hour, this thing clicks on and off probably every minute or two minutes.
  • It makes a pretty audible click/clunk when turning on, not sure if that is normal or not. When its running, it runs smoothly, just hums along...
  • Any guesses what kind of well this is? Shallow, deep? Should I even care what it is?

Those are just some of the questions popping into my head. Honestly any info that anyone can give would be much appreciated :-)
